A circa 1947 silver plated flute by Clement Masson bearing engraved maker's mark and date 1947 "Clement Masson la Couture Boussey (Eure) - Breveté SGDG - 1880" 67 cm long in hard case

CONDITION REPORTS
(Provenance: The flute was made in 1947 for the daughter of the then headmaster of Rugby School. It was subsequently purchased by a family and then finally passed on to the vendor about 25 years ago) The maker, Clément Masson, bought the flute making business from Djalma Julliot (1858-1921) who was a specialist of the transverse flute and who was well known in 19th century France. When he started working under his own name in 1894, he decided to expand the family tradition of making keys for musical instruments, by starting actually making instruments - thus he chose to make metal flutes. The business was in La Couture-Boussey, in the Eure department, northern France. The Breveté SGDG (patent without government guarantees) was a French type of patent that ceased to exist in 1968. Djalma Julliot sold the business to Clément Masson in 1911.
