A Composite Scottish Basket-Hilted Backsword Last Quarter Of The 17th Century With broad tapering blade double-edged towards the point (one side with old edge nicks) and cut with a narrow fuller over half its length along the back on both sides, the fullers retaining faint traces of incised letters at the forte, the latter struck with a shield-shaped maker's mark on one side and with a small cross mark on both sides, iron 'ribbon' guard of broad flat bars (one at the side with old break) framing an incised ovoidal panel on each side, and with triple incised line decoration, rudimentary quillons, replacement wheel-shaped pommel secured by lead solder to the ring (incomplete) at the top of the guard, and later wooden grip with remains of leather wrapping (old rust patination) 82.8 cm. blade This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
