A set of three George III silver two-handled tea and sugar vases / condiment vases Thomas Heming, stamped with maker's marks only, four times on the foot and twice on the covers, London, circa 1765 Each of vase form with tapering sides, broad upper lobed band between stippled panels, applied with swags in high relief, upright husk capped loop handles either side, the front of each later engraved with an armorial, the reverse with a crest, on a pedestal stem and square base, height 23.5cm and 20.5cm, weight 33.6oz. (3) Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited 2008 The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection These are the impaled arms of John MORANT (1825-1899) of Brokenhurst Park, Hampshire and his wife Lady Henrietta Louisa Priscilla BEAUFORT (1831-1863) 3rd daughter of Major Henry SOMERSET (1792-1853) 7th Duke of Beaufort by Emily Frances SMITH (1800-1889) born Torquay. They were married in 1855. There was no issue from the marriage. The armorial will have been engraved in the period 1855-1889. John MORANT was the son of John MORANT (1787-1857) of Brokenhurst Park by Lady Caroline HAY (1805-1877) daughter of William HAY (1772-1819) 17th Earl of Erroll by Alicia ELIOT (1775-1812). The MORANT family acquired the Brokenhurst Estate in 1769, when Edward MORANT (1730-1791) purchased Brokenhurst Park and Watcombe Farm in Hampshire. Edward was a rich sugar plantation owner in Jamaica. Thomas Heming was appointed Principal Goldsmith to King George III in 1760 and was the first working goldsmith to hold this post since the early seventeenth century.
