Dutch School (18th century), after Cornelis van Poelenburgh (Dutch, circa 1586-1667) Nude Figures Bathing in a Classical Landscape inscribed and dated 'Polenberg / 1640' (on the reverse) oil on panel 22.5 x 28.5 cm (8 7/8 x 11 1/4 in). framed 37.0 x 43.0 x 3.5 cm (14 5/8 x 16 15/16 x 1 3/8 in). Footnotes: Provenance A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. Cornelis van Poelenburgh's Paysage aux cinq baigneuses, upon which the present work is based, is held at the MusƩe du Louvre in Paris (INV 1697; MR 918). Since the present work features the reverse of the original composition, it was likely based on a print of Poelenburgh's painting - possibly the one by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783) at the British Museum (1861, 1109.232). This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD).
