A Rare Lock-Knife Of Unusually Large Size By Unwin & Rodgers, Royal Cutlery, Sheffield, Mid-19th Century With single-edged blade (cutting-edge chipped, some old pitting) chipped-back and with false double-edge to the point, one side etched 'HOPWOOD' within scrolling foliage, the ricasso stamped with maker's details on one side, grip comprising embossed white-metal adorsed horse's head quillions, an alligator's head between, pinned cowhorn grips (minor old insect damage) with bevelled edges, two on one side with shaped white-metal escutcheon, sprung release-lever along the back, and embossed horse-head pommel with an artilleryman above a field gun on each side 27.5 cm. blade, 57.8 cm. overall Footnotes: Unwin & Rodgers exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the London International Exhibition in 1873.
