A pair of French ormolu candlesticks, after a model by Corneille Van Clève 18th/19th Century In chiselled and gilded bronze, the shaft represents a cornucopia held for one by a woman and for the other by a man, the umbilicus decorated with arabesques and shells, the circular base encircled by a frieze of foliated interlace, 35.5cm high Footnotes: A similar pair is part of the collections of the Louvre Museum, to which they were donated by Claude Sere in 2011 (Inv. OA 12372). They are presented as being after the goldsmith Nicolas Delaunay (1646-1727) and the sculptor Corneille van Clève (1646-1732). These candelabra have been exhibited, Royal Treasures from the Louvre: Louis XIV to Marie Antoinette, San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, 2013, p. 42, cat. 12. Another pair is in the Wallace Collection in London (Inv. F28-9). All these candle holders are to be compared to Van Clève's models and in particular to the drawing attributed to him and which is kept in the library of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (illustrated in particular in Peter Hughes, The Wallace Collection.
