ONE JADEITE AND TWO JADE SNUFF BOTTLES Qing Dynasty Comprising: a yellow jade snuff bottle carved through patches of brown skin to depict the Hehe twins; a pale celadon snuff bottle of rectangular form carved with a bird beneath millet on one side and a peach tree beside lingzhi fungus on the reserve; and a jadeite snuff bottle of compressed circular form, of moss green colour with apple green streaks, stopper. 6cm (2 3/8in) high (4). Footnotes: 清 翠玉鼻煙壺一件及玉鼻煙壺兩件 The yellow jade snuff bottle includes an old label reading 'Wizard Making Clouds and Rain', however, it appears that the writer missed one of the two figures in the composition who are instead the Hehe twins, the patron deities of Chinese merchants and represented 'the twins of Immortality and Harmony'. The two are often identified as the priests Han Shan and Shide, the former a monk poet of the Tang dynasty.
